Long Reach Long Riders – The Ride to the Ride
The Ride To The Ride was uneventful in all the good ways. After driving 1,841 miles over 2 1/2 days, we rolled into Denver tired and road-weary, but thrilled to have dodged much of the most severe weather plaguing the country recently.
There is one notable story to share… a reminder of all that’s good in America, all rolled into one apple pie. Looking for lunch, we decided to follow a small billboard sign directing us to a little place in Wilson, KS. Yes, Kansas. The cafe, Made From Scratch, has delicious, homemade country food. I can vouch for the reuben sandwich made with homemade rye bread AND homemade corned beef! Noticing their homemade pie case, I asked if I could buy a whole pie to bring to our small LRLR gathering that evening in Denver. This is not something they normally do, but she thought about it a moment, and said, OK. We chose the apple, thinking it would travel best for the rest of our journey. She was struggling a bit to get the pie out of the ceramic dish and then asked if we were coming back their way again. I said yes, but not until the following Sunday. She didn’t hesitate and told us to just drop it back off as we’re passing through. STUNNED doesn’t describe my reaction. Wow. Just Wow. Needless to say, we were happy to take her up on her offer, and I tucked away their business card just in case we need to ship it back.
If you’re wondering, the pie was delicious and much appreciated by all! So, the next time you’re passing through Kansas on I-70, drive the 2 miles south from exit 206 to Made From Scratch. Plan accordingly. They’re only open for breakfast and lunch. Bonus: this little town also boasts the World’s Largest Czech Egg. A little random, but a whole lot of redemption for Kansas.
